Horndiplomat-The new cabinet of Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, was unanimously approved by the House of Representatives on Tuesday this week. His selection and nomination of outstanding, qualified, skillful, knowledgeable, suitable and committed ministerial nominations was received with appreciation as were the changes in portfolios. They were designed to address the questions and aspirations of the Ethiopian people and ensure the continuity of the reforms that have been launched in the last few months.
With half of the appointments going to women, the Prime Minister noted that women make up more than half of the population and it was his deep conviction that gender equality would ensure peace and stability in the country. The Prime Minister emphasized that a leader must be “rightly concerned with everything from strategy to vision sharing, teambuilding, motivation, humbleness, lead through example, demonstrate physical and emotional intelligence and create conducive working environment for staff.” Above all, said the Prime Minister, he must be a person who leads through exemplary action, deep conviction and abide by the rule of law.
The new cabinet has been welcomed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: “I commend Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia for appointing a cabinet with full gender parity. Women’s leadership and gender equality in all areas are not only priorities for the UN and the African Union, but essential to a peaceful and prosperous world”. Ms María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) congratulated Ethiopia on achieving a record 50% of female Ministers in the new cabinet, and said: “Let’s work for gender equality and for more women in politics to make a difference.According to Ethiopia Foreign Affairs Ministry
