Ethiopian, Eritrean leaders officially reopen Border after 20 years
Horndiplomat-Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea today officially opened the Debay Sima – Burre border point between the two countries for road transport connectivity. in a further step toward warmer ties between two countries that fought a war two decades ago.
The two leaders will arrive in Asmara shortly and proceed to Serha-Zalambesa connection for a similar ceremony according to Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Information Minister and Ethiopia Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister’s Office  Fitsum Arega.
“President Isaias Afwerki & Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed today officially opened the Debay Sima – Burre border point between z two countries for road transport connectivity. The two leaders will arrive in Asmara shortly & proceed to Serha-Zalambesa connection for a similar ceremony.” according to Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Information Minister.
Meanwhile, Ethiopia Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister’s Office  Fitsum Arega confirmed the Leaders visit to Bure Front along Ethio-Eritrea border.
“PM Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki are visiting Bure Front along Ethio-Eritrea border to celebrate the New Year with members of the Ethiopian & Eritrean Defense Forces following the full normalization of the relations between the two countries.” Fitsum Arega said on Twitter.
This will give landlocked Ethiopia access to the port of Assab.
Another border post, near the Ethiopian town of Zalambessa and on the main road linking the two countries, is also set to reopen.
This follows a peace deal in July restoring diplomatic and trade relations.
