As Philip Hammond and Theresa May were torn into by the Labour party over the National Insurance U-turn – though not, in some people’s opinion, by Jeremy Corbyn – Boris Johnson rode an armoured vehicle in Mogadishu.
He made a surprise visit to Somalia and expressed his sympathies for the country, which is currently facing a drought.

“It is all so, such a shame that you are facing the problems that you are facing, particularly of course the drought and the risk of starvation, though I think that we are moving fast to try to tackle that this time ’round,” the Foreign Secretary told President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed.

He said that on  May 11, Britain would host a conference on Somalia to help address the country’s problems such as extremist attacks and corruption.

It was also announced by the Government that  it would match “pound for pound” the first £5 million the public donates to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s East Africa Crisis Appeal.

Somali-born athlete Mo Farah has spoken out on the plight of his country.
He said: “As a father of four, it hurts to see children without food and water, but this is a reality being faced by parents in East Africa right now.
“The drought is really bad and there are millions of children at risk of starvation. I was born in Somalia and it breaks my heart to hear stories of how families are suffering.
