Horndiplomat-A military coup attempt is underway in Turkey, the country’s prime minister has said.

Here are the latest developments:

.The Turkish military said in a statement that it had “taken control”
.An announcer on Turkey’s state broadcaster has said the country is now run by a “peace council”
.But a presidential source said the president and government are still in power
.Gunshots were heard in the capital Ankara as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overheard
.Shots were also fired as crowds gathered near Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge, which has been closed
.Seventeen Turkish officers have reportedly been killed in a helicopter attack
